Heritage Week

It was an exciting start to our last week of term! To begin our Heritage Week we had an assembly with Francesca Beard, a writer and performance poet. Our main theme for this week is ‘We are Fair Field’ and we are thinking about the importance of our personal identity and the different communities we are part of. Whilst years  3 and 4  have participated in fantastic poetry workshops with Francesca, the rest of the school have begun to look at where they belong and creating excellent work linked to our...

Year 3 Roman Workshop

On Tuesday 13th June 2016, Year 3 took part in a Roman workshop.  They learnt about the Roman invasion of Britain, battle strategies and gladiators.  They took part in an authentic battle, with Boudica and her barbarian hordes.  As well as marching in a Roman formation, including the infamous ‘toroise’. The children also took part in a Roman quiz and played the typical Roman past time of Delta, whereby they had to total their scores using Roman numerals. The children also came to school in Roman costumes to make their experience more authentic. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a great deal. Thank you to all of the parents for supporting the children with their...

Year 3 Verulamium

As part of our History topic on Romans, Year 3 visited the Verulamium Roman museum. We took part in a workshop where we were able to handle real Roman artefacts.  This allowed us to learn about Roman buildings, how they cooked, what they ate, jewellery and what they wore. We also explored the museum exhibits which contain more artefacts and Roman mosaics excavated at the site. After we had visited the museum, we went to Verulamium Park where we saw the remains of the city wall and gate house.  In addition to visiting the wall, we went to the hypocaust which showed the remains of a villa with a detailed mosaic on the floor. We could also see the remains of the underfloor heating system. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and are looking forward to our Roman workshop at school, after half-term....
