Today, we held a special assembly to celebrate Chinese New Year, planned and led by some of our children who celebrate with their families.

The children did a fantastic job sharing their knowledge, experiences and traditions with the rest of the school. They explained the meaning behind Chinese New Year, how families prepare for the celebrations, and why this festival is such an important time of year. We learnt about cleaning homes to welcome good luck, enjoying reunion dinners with family, giving and receiving red envelopes, and watching colourful dragon and lion dances.

The children also shared which zodiac animal represents this year and what it symbolises. It was wonderful to see them speak so confidently and proudly about their heritage, and to see the rest of the school listening so respectfully and with great interest.

Assemblies like this are a powerful reminder of the rich diversity within our school community. We are very proud of the children who led the assembly and grateful to them for helping us all learn something new.

Laughter, teamwork and face-to-face conversation filled the room as children played, chatted and connected with one another. It was a lovely reminder that you don’t need technology to have fun or to feel included.

Year 4 had an unforgettable day on their trip to St Albans Cathedral this week, bringing their Roman history topic to life through a truly hands-on experience. The children explored local Roman history, learning about Alban: how he became England’s first saint and why he was brutally killed by his Roman governor, resulting in the city taking his name and a cathedral to be built on the site of his death. The children were fascinated and everyone became involved in a performance of his story, dressing up and playing their roles wonderfully. They were able to see St Albans' tomb and some were chosen to light a candle for reflection. The children also had the opportunity to create beautiful Roman-style mosaics.

One of the highlights was meeting a Roman soldier dressed for battle. Some of the year group were chosen by him because they had potential as Roman soldiers, to hold his spear and shield and to feel just how heavy they would have been to carry all the way from Rome to Verulamium.

It was an exciting and inspiring day full of learning, creativity and curiosity.

We observed a two-minute silence to reflect on their courage and the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

As part of the assembly, some of our Year 6 children read the poem In Flanders Field and shared a letter of thanks to our soldiers, expressing their gratitude for their dedication and bravery.

Lest we forget.

Last half term, Year 4 studied the African country of Benin. They used sources to deduce how the Benin people lived and learnt about their Oba (king) and their relationship with European traders. Their learning culminated with a debate on whether the British should give back the Benin bronzes looted from the Benin Palace. The year group's opinions were divided and the children gave impressive, articulate and convincing arguments for both sides.

On Tuesday, Year 4 enjoyed a trip to the British Museum where they saw the famous Benin bronzes they had been studying. They were in awe of having the opportunity to see them and had a wonderful day exploring the museum and even seeing mummies and Egyptian artefacts they studied in Year 3.

They were a credit to the school, showing great curiosity and engagement. We are very proud of them

Victories against Crowley Hill B, Newberries, Kennilworth & Kennilworth Castle Club saw us place first overall, with a progression to the next round in March.

The children represented our school with exceptional sportsmanship & a great competitive spirit. Some of our team had never played in a cricket match before but still displayed strong batting and fielding skills.

Also, a big thank you to the parents who were able to support with transport. We can't wait til March!

They shared the meaning and traditions of this special festival with confidence, joy, and pride – it was a real celebration of culture and community. It was also lovely to welcome their families, who joined us to watch the assembly and support the children. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a sweet treat of barfi – a big thank you to the families who kindly shared it with us.

This week, Year 3 took part in a hands-on role play experience designed to help them understand what life was like during the Bronze Age.

Mrs McCarthy and Mrs Haque created a realistic setting that transported the children back in time, encouraging them to think about how people lived without modern technology or comforts. The children worked together to chop wood, build shelters, and use basic survival skills. They gathered around a fire to share stories and reflect on how communities might have passed down knowledge and traditions.

Using charcoal from the fire, they also created cave-style drawings, exploring how early humans used art to communicate and express themselves.

The experience gave the children a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in the Bronze Age and how people relied on cooperation, creativity, and resilience to get by. It was wonderful to see the awe and wonder on the children's faces.

They got hands-on with real police vehicles — stepping inside a patrol car and a fully equipped police van — and even tried on some authentic police gear! 👕🚔🧢

To top it all off, they tested their fitness and stamina with a lively bleep test, getting a taste of the physical demands of police training. A huge thank you to our local police team for continuing to inspire and engage our pupils through this brilliant programme. The excitement could be heard throughout the school! 💪📢👏

The children worked extremely hard to prepare the allotment. There was a lot of weeding to do at the start to prepare the beds before planting a variety of vegetables, including potatoes, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, onions, and more.

A big well done to the children that tackled the tough soil to create a bed where we have also sowed some native wild flower seeds - it was a tough job!

The allotment will be a great resource for the school providing the children with the opportunity to learn about growing food, sustainability, and the role of gardening during the war.

We look forward to watching the garden grow and becoming a meaningful part of our school community and curriculum.
