English

Vision

At Fair Field, we believe that English underpins all areas of the curriculum and is key to unlocking every child’s potential. Through a broad, creative, and engaging English curriculum, we aim to equip our pupils with the language, literacy, and communication skills they need to thrive.

We view English as a vital subject that nurtures expression, critical thinking, and imagination. By exploring a diverse range of texts and writing opportunities, pupils learn to read and write with purpose, clarity, and confidence. From crafting compelling narratives to writing to inform and persuade, children develop their ability to communicate effectively for a variety of audiences and real-life contexts.

Reading is at the heart of our school. We promote reading for pleasure and ensure every child is exposed to rich, meaningful texts that inspire, challenge and reflect the diverse world around them. We believe that inside every child is a reader and a writer—it is our role as educators to nurture that potential, encourage curiosity, and help each pupil discover their voice.

How we deliver English at Fair Field

At Fair Field, we provide a structured and engaging English curriculum that develops the essential skills of reading, writing, and spoken language. Our teaching is underpinned by a clear progression of skills and strategies that support pupils in becoming confident communicators and creative thinkers.

We follow a consistent writing sequence across the school, where pupils:

  • Analyse the features of high-quality model texts
  • Plan their ideas using a variety of scaffolds and strategies
  • Draft their writing with a clear purpose and audience in mind
  • Edit and improve their work through guided and independent feedback
  • Publish their writing with pride, sharing their work with peers and the wider school community

To support sentence-level development, we teach Alan Peat sentence structures, introducing a new sentence type each half-term in every year group. This helps pupils expand their writing toolkit, experiment with language and improve their grammar, fluency, and style.

Reading is taught through both whole-class and guided approaches, using a wide range of high-quality texts to develop comprehension, vocabulary and a lifelong love of reading. Speaking and listening are woven throughout lessons, with regular opportunities for discussion, performance and presentation to build confidence and oracy skills.

Through this approach, we aim to ensure every child sees themselves as a reader and writer and is equipped with the tools to succeed across the curriculum and beyond.
