Modern foreign languages

Vision

At Fair Field, we believe that learning a foreign language is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our vision is to ignite curiosity about other languages and cultures, fostering a sense of openness and global citizenship in all our pupils. Through engaging, practical, and progressive language learning experiences, our children become confident communicators, developing key skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in another language. We aim to instil a lifelong love of language learning, while helping pupils appreciate the richness and diversity of the wider world.

Our goal is not only to teach vocabulary and grammar, but to encourage pupils to understand and embrace cultural differences, build communication skills, and develop confidence in expressing themselves in another language—skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.

How we teach MFL at Fair Field

At Fair Field, we teach Spanish across Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels programme. This structured and engaging scheme ensures full curriculum coverage, progression of skills, and enjoyable lessons that make learning a language accessible to all pupils, regardless of their starting point.

Our MFL curriculum is shaped by three key principles:

  • Language Skills Development – Pupils develop their ability to listen to, speak, read, and write in Spanish through interactive lessons that include songs, stories, games, and role-play. Lessons are structured to revisit and build on prior knowledge, enabling pupils to make clear progress across the key stage.
  • Grammar and Vocabulary – Core grammatical structures and vocabulary are introduced gradually and in context. Pupils are taught to recognise patterns in the language, apply rules confidently, and begin forming their own sentences with increasing independence.
  • Cultural Awareness – Through Language Angels, pupils explore Spanish-speaking countries and their cultures, traditions, and festivals. This enriches their learning and helps them develop a deeper understanding of global communities.

Assessment is integrated through informal classroom activities, low-stakes quizzes, and the revisiting of key vocabulary and grammatical concepts. By embedding regular speaking and listening tasks, pupils build confidence in pronunciation and communication.

At Fair Field, our MFL curriculum opens a window to the world. We aim for pupils to leave Key Stage 2 with a positive attitude towards language learning, a secure foundation in Spanish, and the cultural awareness to become respectful and informed global citizens.
