Mathematics at Fair Field
We currently follow the Herts Essential planning for Maths which uses a CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract). Concrete resources, such as Base ten or counters, are used to develop children’s conceptual understanding allowing them to visualise an amount. They are then encouraged to represent this pictorially progressing to an abstract representation e.g. writing the calculation.
There is a big focus on the language the children are using and speaking frames are provided to encourage good mathematical vocabulary. Cross-curricular links are made so children get to use their mathematical skills in other subjects. For example, Year 3 have used bar charts during computing to compare information in databases. The children complete their homework on MyMaths which is online and links to what they are learning in class.
